Deficiency of nutrients can cause low levels of serotonin. Low levels of serotonin can cause depression. The best way to resolve this is by eating foods that provide the building blocks that our body needs to make serotonin.

Or we can take supplements.

We recommend the healthy lifestyle instead of more pills. This writer can say from personal experience, having taken handfuls of vitamins for years and still becoming seriously ill. Pills—including vitamin supplements—are not a substitute for a lifestyle change. They can help, but they will never accomplish the same result!

The healthy lifestyle that we recommend for depression is the same program that helps us recover from almost every other chronic illness. It calls for fresh, unprocessed fruits, vegetables, seeds, grains and nuts from the produce department of the grocery store or from an organic market; discontinue the use of packaged or processed foods, eat 60% of our food raw.  If you can increase that to 85% raw without too much stress, you are likely to notice faster results. But if gradual change works better for you, be encouraged that any persistent change is likely to bring encouraging improvement.

Raw, freshly made vegetable juice can accelerate the process. Particularly the use of green juice. The juice provides nutrition that the body can use immediately without taking up a lot of energy to digest the fiber. Fruit juice is too much of a sugar bomb and should be avoided. But eating fruit is fine.

Remember that you will get about twice the nutrition from foods that you do not cook. You get 100% more enzymes from uncooked food than from cooked, since heat destroys 100% of the enzymes. When enzymes are still present in foods, we assimilate more of the nutrition.

Next . . . exercise.
