Asthma: Food allergies. No milk in the original plan!

Asthma is an autoimmune disease wherein the body does not react normally to certain allergens.

It over reacts.

Therefore, building a healthy immune system can put your body in a better position to deal with allergens in a normal way and can, therefore, reduce allergic reactions pretty spectacularly.

But for now, there is a number of foods that have a reputation for causing asthma.

Cow´s milk probably has the biggest reputation of all as a food villain. That reputation is well deserved. Milk produces mucus. Remember that asthma is a condition that involves inflammation and mucus congestion in the lungs. Mucus we can do without!

For this reason, milk contributes not only to asthma but to sinus problems and other allergic reactions.

But what are we going to do? We NEED milk. We need it to get enough calcium and protein for strong bones and . . .

Well, just a little deductive reasoning is in order. How many animals can you think of that drink milk after they are weaned? And let´s take it a step further. How many animals chase after some other animal to drink its milk?  Or feed it to their offspring?

Or we can look at it from another viewpoint. When the Creator set the first man and woman in the garden and said to them you can eat any herbs and seed bearing fruit in the garden, did he also add that you need to chase down one of these cows for her milk?

No matter how you look at it, milk was not in the original plan.

The dairy industry does just one thing better than mass produce dairy products. They are expert marketers. They have marketed their products to us until we think we have to have them. We do not. In fact, we are better off without them even if we do not have asthma!

Now, having used our own good deductive reasoning, let´s look at a little science.

When we consume animal products, they set up an acid condition in the body. In order to keep you healthy, your body must neutralize that acid. It has one resource with which to do that. It is the calcium that is stored in your body. It takes that calcium right out of your bones to neutralize the acid and bring your body back to healthy normal. One medical doctor, Dr. Loraine Day  says that, for that reason, the more milk you drink, the more osteoporosis you will have.

Some studies even show that the phosphorous in milk also interferes with absorption of calcium.

So much for milk producing strong bones. In short, whether you have asthma or not, you can be healthier if you delete dairy products from your menu.

But if we do that, from whence do we get our calcium? You can take it in supplements. If you do, be sure to get a supplement that also contains magnesium. Also we all need to get sunshine every day, if possible, for Vitamin D. Otherwise we will not absorb the calcium we get from any source. That´s because Vitamin D is required for the absorption of calcium into our bones.

The original plan is for us to get calcium from the food we eat, not from pills created in a laboratory. Many vegetables are calcium rich. Sesame seeds have 350 mg of calcium in ¼ cup. Collard greens have 220 mg of calcium per cup. Dark green leafy vegetables are especially rich in calcium and that calcium,  unlike that of milk, is easily absorbable by our bodies. Plus it is likely that there are many nutrients in these vegetables that have not even been discovered  yet. So our best choice is the original plan—lots of dark green leafy vegetables.

But whatever route you decide to take, I would eliminate all dairy products from my diet, as an asthmatic. In fact, I already have!

Next time, more information on food allergies.
