ArialNot only does our health affect our thinking. Our thinking affects our health. So here, again, we have another dynamic circle.
What we think can cause our bodies to secrete certain hormones and suppress others. We can produce incredible stress levels in ourselves by the things that we think about. One health care professional, Dr. Loraine Day, M.D., who now specializes in natural healing, discourages recovering patients from watching television, including the news, since she says it is all negative. Once we are well is a different matter. But when we are trying to regain health, focusing on positives is important.
Our thinking is at least as important as our healthy lifestyle. This is not to advocate avoiding reality. We have to know what is going on in order to make good decisions. But beyond that it is not necessary to spend valuable time thinking about those things or watching them on TV or in the movies. Focus on positives!
Some people think that it is impossible to control how we think. The good news is that that is a myth. Here is the reason.
Psychologists tell us that we cannot think a positive thought and a negative thought at the same time. Therefore, if we substitute positive thoughts we crowd out the negative. It is that easy. It will take a bit of practice and determination at first. But others have done it and so can you! Just remember this. We develop habits in how we think. Once we focus on negatives long enough, it becomes a habit.
But it takes just 21 days to develop a new habit and a new way of thinking. Good habits are our friends. They make doing the right thing easy!
Someone much smarter than I once said that “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things. (my emphasis)” –the Bible
There you have it. A major factor of good mental health as well as good physical health.
An attitude of gratitude is essential for good health. We can choose that attitude. Holding resentments against people who have betrayed or damaged us just is not worth the price we pay—physically as well as emotionally. It is necessary to forgive. It is also important not to blame other people for our situation.
And, being adults, we can choose what we will think.
